Relationships between Hope and Depression in Patients with Breast Cancer

Abstract
Purpose: This study was to identify relationships between hope and depression women with breast cancer.

Methods: Data were collected by questonnaires from 106 women with breast cancer who were under treatment at out patients department and admitted at Pusan University hospital in Busan. Data were collected from February 18, 2007 to April 14, 2007. The Instruments included Hope scale, Self-rating Depression Scale. The collected data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe s test, and Pearson s correlation coefficients by SPSS WIN 12.0 program.
Results: There were significant differences in the hope by religion, the level of religious faith, religional effect on life, and the level of positive attitude during the treatment. There were significant differences in the depression by the level of religionus faith, religional effect on life, and the level of positive attitude during the treatment. Hope was significantly correlated with depression.

Conclusion: These results suggested that promoting hope would decrease depression effectively among women with breast cancer.
